One of the highlights of this discovery auction are a set of two Marc Chagall “Paris L’Opera” posters (Lot #5598). Chagall was a Russian-French artist of Jewish origin; art critic Robert Hughes noted him as “the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.” The posters are a detail shot of a ceiling in the Paris Opera that Chagall was commissioned to repaint in 1963. Chagall divided the ceiling into different sections, painting each as a different scene from famous opera and ballet productions. The opera house then asked him to create a limited-edition poster to highlight the ceilings big debut. Chagall created these posters based off of the section of his ceiling mural featuring Romeo and Juliet. The posters would look great hanging in your home, as they include artistic representations of one of the world’s most famous lovers.
