I Voted! (For My Favorite Pieces in the November Auction)

I am often asked what my favorite piece is in any given auction which is a very hard question to answer. Harder still, is to answer the question as to who my favorite artist is.  In honor of the elections, the following pieces (and artists) are getting my vote.

A New York artist by way of Maryland Institute College of Art, Nathan Ritterpusch, gets my first vote with his piece, Lot 901: “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend,” estimate: $2,000 – $4,000.  Striking in both composition and size, this piece is a showstopper.  It makes me think of Edward Hopper and Kehinde Wiley with the use of pattern.

My second vote goes to one of my all time favorites, Sam Gilliam.  We are thrilled to feature seven of his pieces in the November auction, but Lot 909a, “Hittin’ Blue,” estimate: $20,000 – $30,000, is my pick this round.  These three diminutive constructions are whimsical in design, color and composition.

James Brown gets my third vote with the colorful, Lot 953: “Moroccan Head Series IV,” estimate: $400 – $600.  The American-born painter, now active in Paris, is most well known for his figurative work that is reminiscent of Jean-Michel Basquiat.  I love the seemingly minimalist  composition and the bold use of color.

My final vote goes to another Baltimore artist, Lot 966: Glen Walker, Female Nude, estimate $300 – $500.  This abstract take on the female form is a favorite of mine because of the muted palette and geometric shapes of the figure.  It presents a subtle nod to Picasso (another favorite).
